The advantage of installing handrails is they can double up as a physical barrier too, clearly demarcating areas which are considered not safe to pass without caution like kerbs, vehicle zones or raised areas with steep drops such as cliff edges or viewing platforms. What are the British standards for handrail?

What is the difference between a guard rail and a handrail?

  • Height: The height of a guardrail is typically higher than that of a handrail or stair rail. The specific height requirements can vary by local building codes and regulations but are generally around 900mm (about 3 feet) to 1100mm (about 3.6 feet) above the walking surface.
  • Design: Guardrails can have a variety of designs and materials, including metal, glass, wood, or other materials, depending on the aesthetic and functional requirements of the structure.
     
• Stair Rail (or Handrail):
  • Function: A stair rail, often referred to as a "handrail," primarily serves as a handhold for individuals using a staircase or ramp. It is designed to provide support, stability, and a gripping surface to help people maintain balance while ascending or descending stairs.
  • Location: Stair rails are typically installed alongside staircases or ramps to provide support for individuals using them.
  • Height: Stair rails are installed at a specific height, typically around 900mm (about 3 feet) above the nosing of the stairs. The exact height may vary based on local building codes.
  • Design: Stair rails are designed to be grippable and are usually round or oval in cross-section to facilitate a secure grip. They may also include decorative elements, but their primary function is support and safety.
